
A sleep disorder, also known as somnipathy is a medical disorder of the sleep patterns of people. Some sleep disorders are serious enough to affect us physically, mentally and emotionally.
Some sleep disorders are the most common include: -
• Insomnia
• Bruxism
• Syndrome of delayed sleep phase (DSP)
• hypopnea syndrome
• Narcolepsy
• Sleep walking
Insomnia is characterized by difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. People suffering from insomnia is often difficult to get up and go back to sleep. They also woke up early and feeling tired upon waking.
One can find two types of insomnia:
Primary insomnia, primary insomnia is normal and is not affected or associated with health conditions or problems.
Secondary insomnia, on this issue, sleep disturbance is due to other reasons and symptoms such as asthma, depression, arthritis, cancer, or heartburn, or consumption alcohol.
Bruxism is the grinding of the teeth with a tight jaw. This is usually caused by the activation of reflex chewing activity. Bruxism usually causes no harm, but cringe on a regular basis can damage teeth and cause other complications to oral health. Because grinding often occurs during sleep, most people do not realize the symptoms of bruxism. However, headaches, constant dull ache or jaw are the symptoms of bruxism. Reflex is active during sleep and all the higher control is inactive due bruxism.
DSP also called delayed sleep disorder is a chronic disorder of sleep time. People who suffer from DSP tend to sleep very late and have difficulty getting up early. This is a disorder of circadian rhythm. This can be caused by several factors such as shift work, gestation, time zone changes, medications and changes in routine.
Hypopnea syndrome is the medical term for normal breathing shallow or slow breathing rate. When the CO2 in the blood increased and decreased oxygen levels cause airway resistance that leads the patient’s inability to breathe and thus hinder sleep.
Sleepwalking is involved in activities typically associated with awake that can include walking, without conscious knowledge of the subject. Sleepwalking is usually defined as participation in other activities that may include changes in sleep position and its place in the subconscious mind. Usually occurs due to excessive stress, anxiety and other psychological factors and in people with genetic factors (family history).
